We’re lucky to be able to access hundreds of different CBD products, all of which have unique benefits and properties. But in spite of the range of options, many people choose to stick to CBD oil. And while CBD oils have a lot of benefits, it’s also well worth considering other products, such as CBD cream.
CBD cream is a way for your body to get a dose of CBD that is both effective and very safe. Whether you suffer from joint pain, a skin condition, or an inflammatory condition, CBD cream can be a great way to get CBD into your system. It can be particularly beneficial for those with arthritis, muscle pain, period cramps, back pain or eczema.
But before you try out CBD cream, there are a couple of things you need to know. In this article, we present you with some useful tips on how to apply CBD cream so that you’re getting its maximum benefits.
Choose The Right Cream For You
Before anything else, make sure that the CBD cream you’ve selected is right for you. In a topical product, CBD is the main active ingredient: it’s the molecule that has properties that can provide relief, calm you, and improve your overall wellbeing. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look at the other ingredients.
As with any other topical product, the more natural the better. If you’re able to recognize the majority of ingredients on the label (shea butter, sweet almond oil, lavender essential oil…) you’re in safe territory. If the product contains a lot of synthetic substances, you may want to go for a more natural one.
And even with natural ingredients, it’s important to make sure that they work well for you. For example, people with acne-prone skin should stay away from ingredients like cocoa butter or coconut oil because they can clog pores and cause further breakouts. And of course, people with allergies or sensitivities need to make sure they can tolerate all of the ingredients on the label.
Please note that CBD products containing trace amounts of THC (less than 0.3%) are now legal on a federal level in the United States. However, they are not FDA-approved, and may still be illegal in certain states. Check your local laws.
Test out a small amount first
CBD is a very safe substance, especially when applied as a topical. But for the sake of safety, we recommend trying out a small amount of cream on one part of your body before you apply it all over.
Even if CBD is unlikely to cause a reaction, it’s possible that your skin doesn’t respond well to one of the other ingredients in the cream. Leave it on overnight and if your skin is fine in the morning, you’ll know that the cream is safe for you.
Take the time to massage it in
CBD cream works by activating the CB1 and CB2 receptors, which are located underneath the first layer of skin. If you simply put the CBD cream on your skin, some of it will be absorbed into your system. But to make sure that you get maximum benefits, we recommend taking a few minutes to massage it in. This will help the CBD molecules travel deeper into the layers of your skin and reach the receptors.
Apply CBD first, and other ingredients second
People with a complex skincare regime may be wondering: at which stage should I apply CBD cream? As a general rule, we recommend applying CBD oil cream to your skin before you use any other topical products like moisturizer or lotion.
Some skin care products contain ingredients called occlusives. These are cosmetic products that seal moisture into your skin and keep it protected. But the problem with occlusives is that they stop other ingredients from being absorbed into your skin. So if you want to use a lotion or moisturizer, make sure to apply it after your CBD cream rather than before.
However, you should be able to use CBD after products like toners and serums.
Think about the dose
The first thing to note about using CBD cream is that you won’t risk overdosing. In general, the risk of taking too much CBD is much lower than people usually expect. And when taking in CBD through the skin, the risk is even lower. So finding the right dose of CBD for you isn’t really about being careful not to take too much. It’s more about finding a dose that works for you while not using up your tub of cream too quickly.
With CBD cream, a little goes a long way. You can use highly dosed creams in very small amounts. For example, if you suffer from joint pain, a small dollop of CBD cream is usually enough to cover a whole hand.
Try to experiment and see what dose works for you. You may be surprised to find that you can get relief even from a pea-sized amount of CBD cream!
Save your CBD cream for important areas
On the topic of not wasting your CBD cream, it’s also good to apply the cream to strategic areas. If you suffer from acne, try to apply CBD cream only on the areas of your face that usually get breakouts. If you have psoriasis, focus on just the areas that get flare-ups.
Applying CBD cream all over the body will still have a lot of benefits—it can make your skin smoother and more elastic, relieve inflammation, even relax muscles. But you may be sad to see your CBD cream finishing too fast!
It’s not exactly difficult to apply CBD cream. However, there are a couple of tips you can use to boost its effectiveness. These are:
- Choosing the right product for you
- Testing it out for allergic reactions
- Massaging it deep into the skin
- Applying other creams or moisturizers after it rather than before
- Choosing the right amount and applying it to the areas that need it most
If you follow all of these guidelines, you’ll really get the most out of your tub of CBD cream.
1. CBD Calming Balm by CBDfx
This calming balm by U.S brand CBDfx is one of our favorite topical CBD products. It uses some of the highest quality CBD available: organic, CO2-extracted, and third-party tested. One of the things which we really like about CBDfx products is that they all have a QR code which you can scan to find out exactly what terpenes and cannabinoids they contain.
Because the CBD in this balm is broad-spectrum, it’s naturally rich in a lot of anti-inflammatory cannabinoids and terpenes. The balm also contains lavender, chamomile, and tea tree essential oils, all of which have great soothing properties. The smell alone is enough to relax you! But that’s not all, these essential oils also contain terpenes which can make the effects of CBD stronger thanks to the “entourage effect”.
With 750mg of CBD in a 2-oz jar, it’s a medium to high potency product. It contains hydrating avocado oil, grapeseed oil, and shea butter which also make it a great option for people with irritated skin. We particularly recommend it to those with conditions like eczema or psoriasis. Applied to your temples or forehead, it’s also a great product for those who suffer from headaches, stress, anxiety, or insomnia.
- All-natural and gentle list of ingredients
- Contains soothing calendula oil
- Pleasant chamomile and lavender smell
- Great price per milligram of CBD
- Not a very portable product
- Dense texture which could make it hard to spread
2. Hemp Salve 750 mg by Endoca
This hemp salve by Endoca has a thick texture, strong potency, and very gentle vanilla and lemon smell. It’s made with a very simple list of natural, organic ingredients. In it, you’ll find hydrating coconut and hemp seed oil, repairing vitamin E, and fragrant lemon peel and vanilla extracts. It’s also made with 750mg of CBD in 30-ml of product, making it one of the strongest CBD topicals we’ve ever seen.
Being so highly-concentrated, it’s a balm you won’t need to use a lot of to feel its effects. It’s an ideal product to apply to your temples or forehead if you suffer from stress, anxiety, headaches, or insomnia. It’s also perfect for relieving pain in targeted areas, if you suffer from joint pain in your hands, or a painful Achilles tendon for example. And because the oils it contains make it so hydrating, it’s also a great choice for people with dry skin, scar tissue, or eczema rashes.
Like all Endoca products, it’s completely organic, GMO-free, and made with a broad-spectrum, CO2-extracted and third-party tested hemp extract. Considering the quality of CBD that it uses, it comes at a very affordable price: just $64 for a jar that contains 750mg. If you’re looking for value for money as well as high-potency, give this Endoca balm a try.
- Refreshing lemon scent

3. Elixinol Full-Spectrum Hemp Balm
Unlike most CBD creams out there, this Elixinol product contains full-spectrum CBD extract. This means that it contains not just CBD, but all the cannabinoids and terpenes naturally found in the hemp plant. Applied to the skin, these molecules can have very interesting properties: some are anti-inflammatory, others fight pain, others still can reduce itching… Overall, a full-spectrum product gives you a lot more than just CBD.
The other ingredients in this balm are also quite unique. For example, it contains grapeseed oil, copaiba oil, and ucuuba butter that give it great moisturizing properties. It also contains pain-fighting rosemary leaf extract, soothing calendula flower extract, and anti-inflammatory, terpene-rich wintergreen and eucalyptus essential oils.
With all these ingredients, this balm has a creamy texture that is slightly thinner than other balms on our list. It’s a great product for people who suffer from back pain or muscle pain, or from skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Depending on your own needs, you can get it in strengths ranging from 50 to 500mg of CBD per tub.
