In recent years, CBD’s popularity has increased so rapidly that regulations just weren’t able to keep up. This led to some major problems. For example, many CBD products entered the market even though they didn’t contain the amounts of CBD or THC that they claimed to. Many more non organic products also made their way into the shelves of health shops everywhere, despite containing sometimes high amounts of pesticides.
Today, certificates are catching up with the CBD world. The recently introduced “USDA certified organic CBD” label aims to help consumers tell the difference between high quality organic CBD and potentially dangerous CBD products. But what does that label actually mean? What does it guarantee? And do you need to look for products that are USDA Certified Organic CBD?
What does USDA certified organic CBD mean?
USDA Certified Organic is a reputable certification that guarantees a certain level of quality and purity. To obtain this certificate, hemp farmers have to go through extensive testing conducted by USDA approved laboratories.
They must prove that they grow their hemp:
- From non GMO hemp seeds
- On radiation free soil
- Without using synthetic fertilizers, growth hormones, or harsh chemicals like pesticides
To get their products certified by the USDA, CBD manufacturers also have to prove that every ingredient in a given product is organic. For example, a CBD oil tincture made with hemp extract and coconut oil should have organic certificates to show for both the hemp extract and the coconut oil. This makes it a lot easier to get the label for some products (CBD oil with few ingredients, pure CBD extract…) than others (like more elaborate CBD edibles or topical products.)

Is it always better to buy USDA Certified Organic CBD?
Because of the way that hemp was decriminalized in the United States, hemp farmers were unable to get a “USDA Certified Organic” certificate until 2018. A few have obtained the coveted certificate since then, but many more are still waiting for it. That’s why we find ourselves in an odd situation: a lot of organic hemp out there isn’t certified organic by the USDA, simply because farmers didn’t have the time or money to get the appropriate license.
Here’s what we can say so far: USDA Certified Organic CBD products are proven to be high quality, non GMO, and natural. Non USDA certified organic CBD products may be just as high quality, but it’s harder for them to prove it. It could be that you find non USDA Certified Organic CBD products that are just as good as the certified ones, but they’re harder to come across.
Then, there is the case of a non U.S brand. Although most Americans prefer to buy U.S grown hemp, there are also some excellent CBD manufacturers based in Europe or other parts of the world. Of course, they won’t have USDA organic CBD certification. But a lot of them have local equivalents. So if you’re looking for the best organic CBD out there, don’t limit yourself to products that carry American certificates.
Where can I find USDA certified organic CBD oil?
Getting USDA Organic CBD certification is so hard that if a brand has it, you can be completely sure that they will tell you about it! Look for a round-shaped white and green label that reads “USDA Organic”. If you can’t find that label easily, the product probably doesn’t have it. And this means you’d have to know a lot more about how they grow their hemp in order to form an idea of the product’s quality.
On our website, we exclusively review organic products. And a lot of them happen to have USDA organic CBD certification. So make sure to check out our reviews and articles on conditions to get the best recommendations for organic CBD products. Below are a few of the organic USDA certified organic CBD oil tinctures we love to recommend.
USDA CBD oil: Our favorite products

1. Joy Organics CBD Oil Tincture
One of our favorite organic products is this high potency CBD oil tincture by Joy Organics. It’s a high-quality product that comes in three different potencies and has all the necessary certificates you should look for in CBD oil.
The extract that Joy Organics CBD Oil uses is not only USDA certified organic, but also GMO free cbd, CO2 extracted, and third-party tested. In fact, one of our favorite things about this product is the fact that it’s so easy to access its certificate of analysis. Simply by clicking on the product, you can find a section that reads “Analysis” and open a PDF document that details everything the product contains: cannabinoids, terpenes, any traces of bacteria or solvents, etc.
As research has shown, broad spectrum products are a lot more beneficial than pure CBD when it comes to relieving pain, inflammation, or mental health symptoms. Overall, it’s a great quality product that we highly recommend to anyone looking for natural, simple, broad spectrum CBD oil. Get it in three strengths ranging from 15mg to 45mg per serving.
PROS
- Broad spectrum CBD extract
- 0.0% THC
- Lab tested
- Three strengths available
CONS
- Unflavored
- No international shipping

2. Elixinol Organic Balance Full-Spectrum CBD Oil
It contains 300mg of CBD in a 30mL bottle and comes in a dark blue glass container with a marked dropper for ease of use.
In its ingredient list, you’ll find full-spectrum CBD extract, MCT coconut oil, and copaiba oil. MCT oil has a neutral taste and smooth mouthfeel which makes it a lot easier to take than hempseed or olive oil-based CBD oils. Meanwhile, copaiba oil has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties that complement those of CBD. It also has a slightly peppery, spicy taste, which goes well with that of hemp.
Like all Elixinol products, it’s guaranteed gluten free and vegan, and doesn’t use any solvent or chemicals in the extraction process. Instead, it uses supercritical CO2 extraction, which preserves the purity of hemp. It’s a simple product with no frills, flavors, or added vitamins. But if all you’re looking for is very high-quality CBD oil with a full-spectrum of cannabinoids, this is our best pick.
PROS
- Simple, natural list of ingredients
- Full spectrum CBD extract
- Medium CBD potency
- Good price per milligram of CBD
CONS
- Elixinol are known for slightly longer than average shipping times
